Theme of the Week

Oh man. This weekend did not feel productive. Yesterday morning I woke up at 7 and proceeded to spend five hours working on my pretty new blog, and then fell back asleep for another hour. Then we went to Oktoberfest at our favorite brewery (where my dog won an Oktoberfest costume contest that was supposed to be for humans), and came home and took another 2-hour nap. After which we ordered Thai food, watched Wall-E, and then went back to sleep. Today was an 8-hour whirlwind of two different baby showers, and now I am home with Luna’s head on my lap, thinking “Holy crap, it’s Sunday night? When did that happen?”

I did get a WOD in this morning, which was a modified “Death By” workout. “Death By” WODs are where you do one rep for each minute on the minute (meaning 1 rep in the first minute, 2 reps in the second minute, 3 in the third minute, and so forth until you fail to complete the amount before the next minute starts), and today we did Death By Burpees except we started each minute with a squat clean, and instead of just going until we failed, we went for 15 rounds regardless of how long it took. If you’re playing along at home, that equals a total of 15 squat cleans and 120 burpees in 15 minutes. I made it to the 9th minute feeling awesome, and finished my 9 burpees with 20 seconds still left, thinking, “Heck yeah, I totally have this!” And then on the 10th round I totally crashed, and barely finished within the minute. And then those last five rounds were puh-retty brutal. As in, I went home to shower and could barely lift my arms to shampoo my hair.

Also, this week I did not meet all of my new goals. We didn’t get a skiing WOD in, though we both did three WODs throughout the week. And I am doing pretty well eating fairly paleo, but still am not as consistent as I’d like to be. I’m not sure why I can’t seem to make a breakthrough on this, since my diet is 100% within my control… even if I like to pretend that it’s not.

But! My new jump rope is fantastic and even though it will probably take me a day or two to get used to it, I have a feeling that those 60 Double Unders are within reach. Also, I am working more and more on my flexibility and feeling better about that.

Also, a few weeks ago I saw a photo that really resonated with me, because I am NOT a morning person. It said something to the effect of, “Nobody will ever be impressed with how much sleep you got.” And I started thinking about how true that was, and how I am such a wimp about waking up early. I can go to bed early enough to be able to wake up at 6, or even 5, and go workout, but am pretty much just lazy in the mornings. So this week I am turning that quote into my theme, and challenging myself to do three 5:30AM WODs (I have only ever made it to the gym at 5:30AM ONCE before…). I am actually kind of looking forward to it. We’ll see how I feel when the alarm goes off in the dark at 5AM on Tuesday morning, though.

Do you prefer to workout in the morning and get it over with, or take out your stress from the day by working out at night? Also, I really hope someone has the answer to this question: Why is Oktoberfest in September?

All the New Crap

As you hopefully noticed, things around here are a little shinier this morning! What do you think?

Some things to note:

  • You can still “like” posts by clicking the “Like!” button at the bottom of the post–even though this kind of looks like a Facebook “Like” button, it isn’t.
  • Those of you who were subscribed via email previously may (should) have received an email this morning confirming your re-subscription. That is not spam, I meant to do that, so please confirm so that you can continue to receive emails about my posts!

I’m also interested to know–if you were previously subscribed to my blog, did you get an email notification about this post?

Last but not least in the category of new crap, my new Rx jump rope should be getting here today (which I know as a result of my obsessive FedEx tracking site-checking… please tell me I’m not the only one who does this…) and I never thought I would be so excited for a jump rope. As my friend Bruno put it, “A jump rope? What are you, seven?” Um, whatever. If my 7-year old self could see me now, she would be pretty ashamed at how bad I have gotten at jump roping. I used to be the jump rope master. Did you guys ever play with Chinese Jump Ropes? It was like doing Cat’s Cradle in-between two people’s legs… anyway, let’s just say I spent every recess of 3rd grade mastering my bright pink Chinese Jump Rope skills. And my new setup has bright pink handles with a white rope, and Brandon’s has bright green handles and a black rope. So hot right now.

To All My Followers

After many hours of internet forum perusing and emails back and forth between tech support, I am actually finally going to be migrating my blog today! Woo!

However, there is one really HUGE downside to this… which is that I will lose all of my WordPress Blog followers. Basically, if you received an email about this post, you are in the clear… but if you arrived here via your WordPress reader, this means YOU!

I really can’t thank you all enough for the support and love that you show every day on this blog, and I really hope that you will continue to follow and stick with me as I continue this crazy journey…

So how do you avoid never having getting to read about my crazy life again?

It’s EASY! Just make your way over to the righthand side of this page and click the button that says “Follow”!

If you do that today, I will be able to migrate you and you will receive email notifications of new posts, even on my same-but-new-stuff-going-on-behind-the-scenes blog.

Or, you can check back in a day or two and I will have a new button for you to click so that you can re-subscribe.

Leave a comment if you have any questions, or you can email me at theascentblog@gmail.com

Yellow Leaves

Well, first of all, you may have noticed that this site is not any more exciting looking than it ever has been… turns out migrating your site is slightly less straightforward than I thought it would be, which is no surprise since I am a total web beginner. But changes are still in the works, they might just take a little while to get here!

Fall has arrived in full force this week in Colorado. The past few weeks have been a mix of 90-degree days and 60-degree days with summer still holding on for dear life, but this week fall has finally taken over and the highs are all in the low 70′s with rain and yellow leaves everywhere and even some snow on the high peaks. This past weekend we drove for about 2 hours to Granby, which is just outside the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, and went on a gorgeous 7ish-mile hike that followed a creek through some pretty amazing yellow aspens. We even saw a family of moose (from very far away, which is good, because moose scare the crap out of me)!

Progress on my new goals is coming along slowly. I finally (remembered to take a measuring tape with me to the gym so I could measure the jump rope I use and) ordered my very own Rx jump rope, which should be arriving tomorrow, so I’m hoping that my Double Under goal will be met before I know it because now I will be able to practice at home! Also, so far we have been doing well with keeping up to 3-4 WODs per week, plus we did a skiing WOD last Saturday that my butt is STILL sore from.

One thing that I have not-exactly been keeping up with is my diet. In general it hasn’t been too bad–yesterday I had a big piece of fish and half an avocado and some pecans for lunch!–but I may or may not have purchased an entire pumpkin pie at Whole Foods last night. And I’m really not sorry, because pumpkin pie is deeeelicious!

Here are some more photos from our amazing little fall hike. What are some fall treats that you’ve been indulging in with the cooler weather setting in?

Fun Stuff On the Way!

Well, I have decided it is time for me to leave the WordPress nest and head on over to a new hosting site so that I can use themes that are way more fun and get plug-ins and do all that technical crap that I have no idea how to do! Woo!

That being said, I am migrating my site this weekend, and since I have pretty much no idea what that means, the likelihood of going through some sort of downtime is probably fairly high. So stick with me and I’ll see you on the other side!

PS, Ideally this migration will not affect how you navigate to my site in any way (aka the address will be the same)… it will just be prettier once you get here! So that’s a good thing.

Have a great weekend!

That Just Hap-pinned!

Our gym has recently started a funny little thing involving a bowling pin. I have no idea why it’s a bowling pin, but it works. Basically, if you do something awesome, TJ writes your name on the pin and then you get your photo taken with it. Recent additions to the pin include people doing their first muscle-ups, their first Rx’d WOD, or getting a big PR on a lift.

What did I do to get on the pin yesterday morning, you ask? Did I finally get a pull-up or PR on my deadlift? Nope. My official pin caption reads “Rx’d with style.”

The WOD yesterday morning was 100 Double Unders, rest 3 minutes, 21-15-9 Front Squats and Deadlifts at 65#, rest 3 minutes, 100 Double Unders. I loaded my bar with the prescribed weight, but put on a 10# plate and a 5# plate instead of one 15# plate, thinking that I might have to drop some weight mid-WOD but wanted to try to go heavy anyway. I mean, I can definitely deadlift 65# but my Front Squat needs a lot of work. It’s frustrating because I feel like my legs could support way more than that, but my core just isn’t strong enough to give me the stability I need.

About halfway through the WOD, I was doubled-over, staring at my bar, and getting ready to drop the extra 5 lbs, when TJ came over and asked how many reps I had left. I still had to do four reps to finish the second set, then nine more in the next set. “Don’t drop the weight,” TJ said. I would have probably argued if I had had enough energy or capacity for lucid thought to do so, but I was so exhausted that I just listened, picked the bar back up, and kept going–and finished the WOD at the prescribed weight, only my 3rd or 4th that I have ever completed fully prescribed, and I didn’t even finish dead last (mostly due to my unexplainable affinity for Double Unders).

It felt pretty good to have a little boost of Hey, I can do this! built into my first week of charging towards all my new goals. In fact, I might even post-emptively (is that a word?) add “Get on the pin” to my list.
