Live from 13.3

//theascentblog

Last night I was so excited to be able to attend the Live Announcement of 13.3! I would say there were around 1,000 people jostling for space on the bleachers inside CrossFit Roots, and I also got to meet two awesome blog readers, Ali and Megan. I also got to chat with Kristan Clever, and Talayna Fortunado, told Dave Castro that we were going to be best friends one day, and asked Bob Harper if he was planning on doing the wall balls in his skinny jeans. But did I get any photos of me with any of these people? Of course not. It’s not like I have a blog to run here or anything. Oops.

Despite the fun and excitement of being there for the live announcement and then getting to watch two crazy talented athletes duke it out feet away from me, that didn’t really overshadow the misery I felt when Dave Castro pulled a wall ball out of that box. I had convinced myself that there weren’t going to be wall balls because the arena wasn’t set up next to a wall, and if you know me at all, you know that I would honestly rather do ANYTHING in CrossFit (yes, even run!) before wall balls.

But no. Here they are. 150 of ‘em.

We all know how much I suck at wall balls. Shall we recap? I get knocked over by the ball constantly, I catch them with my open mouth and end up licking them, the first time I did Kelly I got such a bad bloody lip from the ball hitting me in the face that I threw up after the WOD because I swallowed so much blood. And not only am I super nervous for the wall balls because I just hate them, but I am super nervous because I have never had to do wall balls in a setting where I actually get no-repped for not hitting the 9-foot mark as long as my rep was a solid effort with decent form. Unfortunately, good intentions only go so far in the Open, and I am foreseeing a lot of no-reps in my future. I feel like the true injustice of this WOD is that I am awesome at Double Unders, but I may never even get to see them. I mean come on.

I want to say that I collected tons of helpful tips from Kristan and Talayna about this WOD, but in reality the only thing I was able to get was Kristan’s advice to use your hips, and Dave Castro’s advice to rest by leaning against the ball on the wall so that you don’t have to pick the ball up any more times than necessary. So there you have it folks, tips from the pros.

My hope with this WOD is to get about 17 wall balls per minute, which is one rep every 3.5ish seconds. Is that doable? I’m really not sure. But that would give me 3 minutes at the end to finish the 90 Double Unders, which I am pretty confident would be plenty of time for me to get that many. I hope.

What is your strategy for 13.3? Have you already done it?

17 in a minute? Girl, I hope to be just like you!
I have never ever thought about knocking myself in the face with a wall ball, so you have just instilled a new fear in me.. Tonight’s the night.

Good luck!! Let me know how it goes!

I don’t think I’ve ever done more than 10 wall balls WITHOUT hitting myself in the face! One time I am sure I almost chipped a tooth. OMG Bob Harper — love him! So if there’s no wall, you’re just supposed to throw it up in the air and catch it?

    • clairechapman

They were so tricky! There was a pull-up rig in the arena and they bolted targets onto the side of it. I felt so betrayed.

Targets? I think that’s worse than the wall….they’re a bunch of sadists, aren’t they? LOL

Wait, you met Bob Harper and didn’t take a picture? I don’t want to be harsh but maybe you do deserve a wall ball to the face! Just kidding :) good luck!

    • clairechapman

I’ll keep that in mind when my first wall ball nails me in the nose tomorrow night… I’ll just think, “That one was for Bob Harper.”

Ugh – in 5 months I’ve only had to do wall balls once and the only ball left was a 4 lb one. I can only imagine how bad this is actually going to feel. I’m going to cross my fingers and hope I can at least finish all the wall balls.

    • clairechapman

They make 4 pound balls!? I’m so jealous! We just have 10 and 14 pounders (well, and 20 pounders for the guys). I’ve heard the best strategy is to try to link 10 sets of 15… if I can get 1 set of 15 I am going to be psyched :)

Ooh, I’m GREAT at wall balls! …if I only have to throw them about 2 feet over my head. Damn.

    • clairechapman

I’m great at wall balls too! Wait no. Just great at complaining about them. Crap.

  • Kyle

I’ve never used a 14# wall ball during a wod, I’m a regular of the 8 or 10 pound ball. Scared today to say the least! My only help is that in our gym girls are expected to hit the 10 foot mark during any wall ball workout. So….one foot shorter should help. Right?

    • clairechapman

Haha totally! Honestly I don’t know that a heavier ball really makes a huge difference, my problem is more just about the mechanics of the movement and having a hard time getting into a rhythm. If you are good with the lighter balls then the heavier one probably won’t make a big difference!

I did it this morning – and didn’t even get through the wall balls! I started with the goal of doing sets of 10, but that quickly turned into sets of 5…and then sets of 2. Yep, I’ve actually never hated wall balls until today.
If I had it to do over, I definitely would have paced differently and pushed way harder during the second half. I also had some no-reps, and had a hard time not letting that get to my head. Good luck to everyone else doing it this weekend! I kind of wish I could redo, but am also kind of glad I’m away for work and can’t :)

    • clairechapman

Oh man I am SO worried about getting no repped! It is definitely going to be a mental battle to not take too much rest…

  • Evan:salt, dogs, and duct tape

Rubbing shoulders with the big timers! I broke it up into ten sets of 15. Still not a whole lot of time for rest but I tried to slow down my breathing and take deep breaths to slow my pulse and keep from getting gassed. I don’t know if that worked but I had about 3 minutes for double-undres. I just can’t do double-unders.
