Well, in case you haven’t already heard me tell all about it on Episode 5 of Girls Gone WOD, it’s time to tell you the story about the time that Christmas Abbott and I became best friends. Because it was awesome.
As most of you know, I have had a serious girl crush on Christmas Abbott ever since starting CrossFit. Whether it’s because we’re both petite, or because we both love bull dogs, or because we both have tattoos (although admittedly I have significantly fewer tattoos than she does)… whatever it is, I went into our weekend at the CrossFit Games determined to meet this woman.
I kept my eyes peeled for Christmas all day Friday and Saturday at the Games, but no luck. As Saturday evening approached, I was getting nervous that I might miss my chance to at least get a picture with Christmas, so Brandon and I dropped by the Progenex tent (one of her sponsors) to ask if she was planning to make any appearances. They told us that, as a matter of fact, she would be doing a pit crew demo the next morning, and then taking pictures with fans afterwards. Well, perfect!
We showed up on Sunday morning bright and early to make sure that we were front and center for the demo. They had a NASCAR car with Reebok written all over it sitting in the middle of the demo stage, along with a few members of the pit crew to help out. When Christmas showed up I got a little giddy and started texting everyone I knew things like “OMG. OMG. OMG. I AM ABOUT TO MEET CHRISTMAS ABBOTT. OMG. OMG.” But if that wasn’t good enough, they soon announced that 10 spectators would be chosen to have Christmas teach them how to pull the tires off a NASCAR car… so I practically sprinted up to the announcer (who was only about 10 feet away from me anyway… front and center, I tell ya), and signed myself up. My texts to my friends quickly evolved to “OMG Christmas Abbot is about to each me how to take tires off a NASCAR car!! OMG!!” Yep, I was pretty excited.
After Christmas went over the basics with us, we paired up for the pit crew “WOD” which consisted of 5 burpees and then removing one tire from the car. Not having signed up with a buddy (Brandon graciously hung back to take pictures), I waited until the final heat, only to look over and realize that I was about to go head-to-head with a guy who looked like he could have been competing in the Games. And I was only a little bit off–turns out this guy was Jon Pera, who had competed in the Games the past 2 years, last year finishing only one spot below Chris Spealler. So much for impressing Christmas, I thought.
Jon finished a full burpee ahead of me–which tells you how fast his burpees are if he was able to gain a full burpee on me in a matter of about 15 seconds. But when he got to the air gun, he couldn’t quite get the hang of it. Once I finished my burpees, I more or less dove head-first at the car, and, taking advantage of his struggles with the air gun, lasered in on the lug nuts and victory was mine!
Needless to say, Christmas was very impressed… And then we bonded over how you shouldn’t underestimate the little ones, and that being a petite lady can pretty much be the best thing ever. Especially when you are Christmas Abbott, and/or Christmas Abbott’s best friend, aka me.
